This picturesque moated castle, was built in 1480, by William, Lord Hastings. Locals were hired to sit up all night and watch the level of the moat to assure there would be no flooding of the castle.

Over looking the River Wye are the red sandstone ruins of Goodrich Castle. A reputed haunting stems from a tragic love story dating back to 1646. A niece of a Parliamentarian took refuge in the castle with her Royalist lover. Fearing for their lives, they tried to cross the rain swollen river and were swept away to their deaths. |
brick built castle. The castle was seized by the Crown in 1471 and remained in loyal hands to the time of Henry the VIII, after which it was owned by the Earls of Leicester. They abandoned it in the 1690's. In 1910 the keep's fireplaces were ripped out and sold, and it might have been demolished, but Lord Curzon bought and restored it, as he did with Bodiam Castle.

Built around 1140, Castle Rising Castle, has one of the nicest keeps in England. The castle played its only notable part in history when King Edward III sent his mother Isabella to live in isolation here after a plot against him involving her lover, Roger Mortimer.
